Keren Yaari

I’m an emerging ceramic artist, working in Alto Pass, southern Illinois, surrounded by the beautiful Shawnee National Forest.

I am currently in my second year of an apprenticeship at Alto Clay Works, working under the guidance of potter Stephen Grimmer. Our studio and showroom are open to visitors every weekend.

I came to clay during the pandemic in 2021, and from the very first moment at the wheel, something connected. Working with clay — engaging the body and the four elements — offered grounding and balance during a time of global uncertainty. Learning to center clay on the wheel became a parallel process of learning how to find stability within myself and in the world around me.

Stephen Grimmer’s practice focuses on traditional wood firing, and being immersed in this environment continues to shape my craftsmanship. I enjoy researching, learning, and experimenting, allowing curiosity and process to guide my work.

I create both functional, everyday pieces and more sculptural, decorative forms that emerge through exploration and play. Every piece is handmade from start to finish — wheel-thrown, trimmed and shaped, fired, glazed, and fired again — each step approached with care and attention.

I share my process and ongoing work through Instagram, where I document studio life, making processes, and reflections along the way. My ceramics will be available through my online shop once it opens; announcements and updates are shared via Instagram and my mailing list, where subscribers receive early access and news.

Visit Alto Clay Works during opening hours: Thursday through Sunday, 1–5 PM.
